The flower exists among others within an ecosystem, and the practitioners of Liberatory Design create connections through pollination. In this graphic, the Notice and Reflect modes are placed at the centers of the flower– we encourage you to return to this center each time you pivot to a new mode. We also want to emphasize the graphic’s non-linearity; the petals can be visited in any order to support your unique context. We are living in challenging times that our past experiences and training has not sufficiently prepared us for. Too often, well intentioned equity and design efforts do not succeed—and even produce unintended consequences.

Join Beytna Design for an interactive workshop where you will define an equity challenge in your work and learn more about how the Liberatory Design process can help you find a path forward. You can design an experience, program, policy, system, product, or relationship. But if you are designing for equity, that means your end goal is to create greater equity. There is a sub field of design called “Design for Social Impact” but I would argue all design has social impact. Whether the impact is liberating or oppressive depends on our values and how we enact them.
Mindsets and Modes to design for equity
Within minutes of being on the ground, I was painfully aware of how I was complicit in creating this harm. I pivoted the focus of the trip and reached out to local designers humbly hoping any would be willing to share their critiques and experience (which they were, thank you). The power and courage of these communities to call out the harmful impacts of design validated years of doubt I had been suppressing, and I will forever be grateful to them. Questioning every piece and while rebuilding it — only keeping the parts we felt would help us create liberatory change and work emergently in systems of oppression.

Ask the Community
Design Thinking does not acknowledge the histories (and current manifestations) of oppression, marginalization, and control that created many of the social problems we aim to address through design. Nor does it honor our ancestor’s legacy of resistance to that marginalization. We cannot create authentic change without naming and understanding how these systems of oppression are intertwined in a project and without partnering with community leaders who are leading resistance to dismantle these systems. Design Thinking fails to name and dissect how things like systemic racism, ableism, sexism, xenophobia, etc. dictate how challenges emerge and how we must shape interventions.

As I made sense of my own experience, I saw how many systems were designed to oppress, and wondered if we could use new tools to redesign them. At the same time, I was practicing and teaching design thinking at Stanford, where I previously earned my design degree. I felt there were some unethical elements built into the design process itself, for example, in the re-creation of unhealthy power dynamics. They realized family members had not come to pick them up or that they didn’t have enough money to afford bus fare to get home. One man, in tears, asked the nonprofit volunteer standing next to us if we would pray with him. The design lead kept asking why I wasn’t walking up to them to do interviews, and I made up an excuse.

In a first for Formula E, the car will be outfitted with all-wheel drive (AWD) available during qualifying duels, race starts, and Attack Mode, a power-up system in Formula E that gives drivers an extra 50 kW of power for a set amount of time. It’s unclear if Google intends to give this new design another shot, but many of those who received the redesign earlier this month have said on Reddit in the past few days that the design has disappeared. Design classes were a place where I could experiment and release expectations of perfection. AMD, on the other hand, is only launching new processors, but there will likely be a a new range of motherboards and chipsets, which are often refreshed around new processor ranges anyway, even if the socket doesn't change. Releasing new BIOS updates to support future processors is routine, although with an update coming when we know so little about Ryzen 9000 is a little unusual, especially if the new Zen 5—based processors are not due to launch until much later in 2024. Of course, all eyes will be on the Computex trade show for more information, but AMD has less of a task than Intel in getting its new models out the door.
Liberatory Design builds on the legacy of best practices from fields like design thinking, complexity theory, organizing, equity, restorative healing and beyond. In situations as complex as equity challenges, the way forward is led by noticing, experimenting, learning, reflecting, and repeating. Liberatory Design is structured to build your equity leadership capacity to create real change with the communities you care deeply about. The process itself, as well as the outcomes, are building towards greater collective liberation. This trip became an explosive affirmation of my misgivings about our field. Who were we, as this U.S.-based university, to show up uninvited, mirroring colonial histories, to come and spread our “wisdom” of Design Thinking to locals, many of whom were active practitioners?
